I wyl drawe myn swerd in consentyng / 282 For certes right
as a swerd departeth one in two pecys / right so consenting
departeth god from man / And thenne wil I sle hym with
my honde in deth of synne / Thus saith the fende / 283 For certes
thenne is a man al dede in soule / And thus is synne com-
plysshid by temptacion / by delyte and by consentyng / .
And thenne synne is cleped a meruayll / 284 For soth synne
is in two maners / eyther it is venial or dedely synne Sothly
whan a man loueth ony creature more than Ihesu Crist our
creatour thenne is hit dedely synne / And venyal synne yf
a man loue Ihesu Crist lesse than hym ought / 285 Forsothe the
dede of this venyal synne is ful perilous for hit amenusith
the loue that men shold haue to god more & more / 286 And
therfore yf a man charge more hym self with many suche
venyal synnes / Certes but yf so be that he discharge of hem
by shryfte / they may wel lightly amenuse in hym al the loue
that he hath to Ihesu Crist 287 And in this wyse skyppeth ve
nyal synne in to dedely synne / For certes the more that a
man chargith his sowle with venyal synnys the more is he
inclined to dedely synne / 288 And therfore leet vs not be ne
cligent in dischargyng vs of venyal synne . For the pro-
uerbe saith many smale makyth a greet / . 289 And herkene
thys ensample / a grete wawe of the see comyth somtyme
with so greet a violence that it drenschith the ship And
the same harme do somtyme the smale dropes of water / that
entre thurgh a lityl creuys in the thurrok and in the bottom
of the shipp yf men be so negligent that they discharge hem
not by tyme / 290 And therfore al though ther be difference
betwene thyse two causes of drenchyng / yet algates the
