 desire to be magnified and honoured beforn the peple / 335 Now  
 ben ther two maners of pryde that one of hem is within the  
 herte of man / And that other is withoute / 336 Of whiche  
 forsaid thinges and moo than I haue said apperteynen to  
 the pryde that is within the herte of man / And ther be also  
 other spices of pride that be withouten . 337 But natheles one of  
 thyse spices of pride is signe of that other / Right as the gay  
 leffel of tauernes is signe of the wyn that is in the seler / 338 and  
 this is in many thinges as in speche in contenance in outra  
 geousnes / of aray of clotyng339 Crist wold not so sone haue  
 noted and spoken of the clothing of that riche man in the  
 gospel but yf hit had be synne / . 340 For as saith seynt Gre-  
 gore / Precyous clothing is culpable for the derthe of hit  
 and for his strangenes / for his disguysynges and for  
 the superfluyte / or for the inordynate scantnes / 342 As to the  
 first synne that is in superfluyte of clothing / Whiche that  
 maketh it so dere to harm of the peple 343 that only the cost of  
 the enbrowding / the disgysing endentyng / or barryng /  
 oundyng / palyng and semblable wyse of clothing in  
 vanyte 344 Ther is also costlew furryng in gownes / And  
 also mykyl pounsyng of chesell to make hoolis so mykyl  
 daggyng of sherys 345 with the superfluyte in lenghte of the  
 forsayd gownys traylyng in the dong and in the myre  
 on hors and eke on foot as wel of man as of woman .  
 that al that traylyng is verily as in effect wasted / consu  
 med / thredbare & roten with dong rather than it is yeuen  
 to the poure / to grete domage of the forsaid poure folk 346 and  
 that in sondry wyse / this is to sayn the more that cloth
