he putteth grete peynes ayenst this synne For in tholde lawe
764 yf a woman thral were taken in this synne she sholde be
betyn with stauys to the deth / And yf she were a gentyl
woman she shold be slayn with stonys / And yf she were a bisshops
doughter she shold be brent by goddis comande-
ment / 765 Furthermore for the synne of lecherye god dreynt al
the world / And after that he brent fyue cytees and sanke
doun in to helle . 766 Now lete vs speke thenne of the synne of
lecherye that men clepen auoultrye that is of wedded folke
that is to saye yf that one of hem be weddid or els bothe .
767 Seynt Iohn saith that thauowtrers shul be in helle in a
stynkyng brennyng pyt of fyre & brymston . For lecherye
is likenyd to brymstom for the stynke or her ordure . 768 Certes
the bereuyng & breking of this sacramēt is an horrible thinge
Hit was made of god hym self in paradyse & confermed by
Ihesu Crist / As saith seynt Mathew in the gospel / A man
shal lete fader & moder & take hym to his wyf / and they shal be
two in one flessh / 769 This sacrament betokeneth the knyttyng
to gyder of Crist & of holy chirche / 770 And not only that god
forbad auowtry in dede / but eke he comanded that þu sholdest
not coueyte thy neyghbours wyf / 771 In this heest saith saint
Austyn / Al maner couetyse to do lecherye is forboden / Lo
what saith seynt Mathew in the gospel who so seeth a womā
to couetyse of his lust / He hath don lecherye with her in his
herte / 772 Here may ye see that not only the dede of this synne
is forbode / but eke the desyre to do that synne / 773 This cursid
synne anoyeth greuously hem that it haunte and first to
the soule . For he obligeth it to synne and to peyne of deth
that is perdurable / 774 and to the body anoyeth it greuously
