 Repreueth hem that weyuen sothfastnesse  
 And techyn fablis and suche wrecchidnesse  
35Why sholde I sowe draf out of my fist  
 When I may sowe whete yf me list  
 For whiche I say yf that thou list to here  
 Moralite and of vertuous matere  
 And than yf ye wol yeue me audience  
40I wolde ful fayn at cristis reuerence  
 Done you plesaunce leesful as I can  
 But trustith wel I am a sotheryn man  
 I can nat geste rum ram ruf by lettir  
 And god woot ryme holde I but litil bettir  
45And therfore yf ye lust I wol nat glose  
 I wol you telle a mery tale in prose  
 To knet vp al this fest and make an ende  
 And Ihesu for his grace wit me sende  
 To shewe you the wey in this viage  
50Of that ilke parfyt glorius pilgremage  
 That highte Ierusalem celestial  
 And yf ye vouchesauf anone I shal  
 Begynne vp on my tale for whiche I preye  
 Tel your auys I can no better seye  
55But natheles this meditacion  
 I put it ay vnder correction  
 Of clerkis for I am not textuel  
 I take but the sentence trustith weel  
 Therfore I make protestacion  
60That I wol stonde to correction
