Caxton 1, folio131r image
I wol hym not forsake no thing at al
When myn husbond is fro the worlde I gon
Som cristen man shal wedden me anon
For the apostel sayth that I am fre
To wedde a goddis half where it likith me
He sayth to be weddid it is no synne
Bettir it is to be weddid than to blynne
What reckith me though men say vilonye
Of shrewde lameth and of his bigamye
I woot abraham was a ful holy man
And eke Iacob as fer as euer I here can
And eche of them hadde mo wyuys than two
 And meny another man also
Where can ye say in ony manere age
That euer god defendid mariage
Be expresse wordis I pray you tel me
Or where comandid he euyr virginite
I woot as wel as ye it is no drede
The apostil when he spak of mayden hede
He sayde that ther of precept had he noon
Men may counsel a womman to be oon
But counsel is no maner comandement
He puttith that in our Iugement
 For hadde god comanded maydenhede
Than had he dampned wedding out of drede
And certis yf ther were no seed I sowe
 Virginite what sholde therof growe
Paule durste not comaunde atte leste
A thing whiche his maister yaf non heste
